A, B & Sea: Dungeness
Art Direction, Photography, Research
A, B & Sea is a zine documenting Dungeness.
Exploring the question; How Do the Lives and Stories of Dungeness Reflect Its Landscape and Architecture?
“Dungeness, often referred to as Britain’s only desert, is located on the most south-easterly point of Kent. Stark contrasts define both its landscape and the lives of its residents. Originally home to a small fishing community, where generations lived and worked along the shores, the Dungeness Estate is now owned by EDF and remains largely undeveloped. Recognised as a National Nature Reserve, the area is also home to rare wildlife and plants that thrive in its unique shingle habitat, enhancing its distinctive character.
In the 1960s, Dungeness’ landscape began a dramatic transformation, as it became home to two nuclear power stations: Dungeness ‘A’ and Dungeness ‘B.’ These power stations along the shoreline introduced a modern layer of industrialisation to the area. Their construction altered the physical landscape and reshaped the local economy and community.
Job opportunities brought new people to the area, and the power stations dominated the horizon, symbolising the complex relationship between industrial development and the natural environment. Today, the nuclear power stations stand in stark contrast to the otherwise wild and remote landscape. Do they embody the tension between technological progress and ecological preservation? Or do they add something surreal, inspiring, and unique to the vast barren landscape?”
